There are about 2,000 species of jellyfish,
  • Are found in every ocean and a few inhabit freshwater.
  • Have a gelatinous umbrella-shaped bell and trailing tentacles.
  • Their bodies are made up of 95% water.
  • If they end up on a sunny beach, they will evaporate in a few hours and mostly disappear.
  • In order to move, the bell pulsates.
  • The tentacles are used to catch prey.
  • Many are brightly coloured and very beautiful.
  • The tentacles have tiny stinging cells to stun or paralyse their prey.
  • They have no brain, no blood, no bones, no head, no heart and no nervous system.
  • Eat plankton, fish, fish eggs, shrimp, crabs and sometime other jellyfish.
  • The Box Jellyfish (Sea Wasp) kills more people than any other marine creature.
  • Main predators are the sea turtle and humans - they are eaten in China and also used in Chinese medicine.
  • All jellyfish sting - even dead ones.
  • Some are as big as man whilst others are as small as a pinhead.
  • Live for about 1 year.
  • The Turritopsis Nutricula Immortal jellyfish is the only species known to live forever!
  • A large gathering of jellyfish can number 100,000 individuals.
  • The Giant Arctic Jellyfish tentacles can reach 120 feet.
  • A species of jellyfish - Turritopsis Nutricula - is believed to 'biologically' live forever.  They are found in the Mediterranean Sea
     and the waters of Japan.
  • 90% of all jellyfish are smaller than a human thumbnail.
  • Jellyfish born on the Columbia Space Shuttle, suffered from vertigo when they returned to Earth.
