STOATS
- Are close relatives to weasels and ferrets.
- Live about 4 - 7 years.
- Are widespread throughout the British Isles.
- Are solitary animals except during the breeding season when they also become territorial.
- Others can be found in northern Europe, tundra and temperate forest regions of Asia and North America.
- Are not found in any Mediterranean regions.
- Like to live in woods, farmlands, moorlands, marshes sand dunes and hedgerows.
- Live in dens in banks, hollow tree trunks, rock crevices, mole hills and thickets.
- Their main predators are dogs, cats, large snakes and humans.
- Like to eat rabbits, fish, mice, birds, eggs, earthworms, large insects and small mammals.
- Can move at speed, at about 20 miles an hour.
- Have good night vision but tracks its prey be scent.
- Are relentless hunters.
- The winter white coat (Ermine), is worn by royalty - and were once trapped in large numbers. Hunting them today is less cost-effective, fortunately.
