WASPS
There are about 75,000 species of wasp.
  • Are not to be confused with bees.
  • Eat pollen and caterpillars, nectar, insects, fruit, honey and rubbish.
  • Create a nest out of wood or mud.
  • Like to pick sunny places, in holes underground along riverbanks, or attached to sides of walls and trees, to build their nests.
  • Have black and yellow markings over the body.
  • Are found in every country in the world.
  • Males don't have a 'stinger', therefore, they can sting multiple times without injuring themselves.
  • Are inactive when the temperature drops at night, so they will return to their nest.
  • Females protect the nest.
  • Are actually quite gentle and will only sting if they feel threatened.
  • Can recognise each other's faces.
  • A velvet ant is a type of wasp.
  • The Tarantula Hawk is a giant wasp with the second most painful insect sting in the world.
