A giant penguin that stood as tall as a person has been identified from fossil leg bones discovered by an amateur Palaeontologist on New Zealand’s South Island.
At 1.6 metres and 80kg (12st), the new species, was four times as heavy and 40cm taller than the Emperor Penguin, the largest living penguin.
Fossils of the largest parrot ever recorded have been found in New Zealand. Estimated to have weighed about 7kg (1.1st), it would have been more than twice as heavy as the kākāpo, previously the largest known parrot.
In life, the bird stood 11 feet (3 meters) tall and weighed more than 990 pounds (450 kilograms) — almost as much as a polar bear — making it one of the heaviest-known birds of all time, the researchers reported in a new study.
