There are four species of tapirs. All the four species of tapir are either endangered or vulnerable.

- Eat leaves, branches, bamboo and fruit and some aquatic plants.
- Are related to horses and rhinoceroses.
- Have a trunk.
- Have four toes on their front feet and three toes on their back feet.
- Live as long as 25 - 30 years.
- Live in South and Central America and South Asia.
- Prefer to live in forests or in high grasses.
- The woolly tapir lives in the Andes Mountains.
- The main predators are tigers, jaguars, anacondas and crocodiles.
- Are good swimmers and can also walk along the bottom of rivers.
